Covid-19 Testing

We are now offering a new combination rapid Flu A/B and Covid-19 test by Quidel.  This rapid test will provide results for all three tests in one nasal swab. 

What CareWell centers offer COVID-19 testing?

All CareWell Urgent Care centers offer four types of tests – PCR, Antigen, Antigen + Flu A/B & Antibody.  Click this link to find the center nearest you – https://www.carewellurgentcare.com/centers/.


What are the types of COVID-19 testing available and how long for the results?

  1. PCR (nasal swab) – this test will detect if you are actively infected with COVID-19. Test is sent to our commercial lab partner for analysis which uses the Abbot Architect platform.  This test is FDA Emergency Use Authorization approved. If you are travelling and are required proof of a covid test this is often the most accepted type of test.
    • Lab work is performed by Quest Diagnostics.  Their up-to-date turnaround time to provide results can be found using this link: https://www.questdiagnostics.com/home/Covid-19/HCP/TAT/
      • Turnaround times can vary and change quickly, CareWell cannot guarantee results will be provided within the time period stated on Quest’s website.
  2. SARS Antigen FIA (nasal swab) – a rapid test performed with a nasal swab to detect if you are actively infected with Covid-19. Test results are provided by CareWell using the new Sofia 2 analyzer by Quidel which is FDA Emergency Use Authorization approved.     • Results in as few as 15 minutes.  Due to the current volume of testing it may take up to 5-6 hours for results to be posted to the portal.
  3. SARS Antigen FIA + Flu A/B (nasal swab) – a rapid test performed with a nasal swab to detect if you are actively infected with Covid-19 and/or either Flu A/B.
    • Results in as few as 15 minutes.  Due to the current volume of testing it may take up to 5-6 hours for results to be posted to the portal.
  4. Serum Antibody IgG (blood test) – this test will detect if you have had previous exposure Covid-19 and if your body is building antibodies.  Test is sent to our commercial lab partner for analysis which uses the Abbot Architect platform.  This test is FDA Emergency Use Authorization approved.
    • Results in 48 hours

Does insurance cover COVID-19 testing?

Yes, if you are symptomatic and the attending CareWell provider evaluates you and determines it is medically necessary.

Yes, if you are asymptomatic (showing no symptoms) and the attending CareWell provider evaluates you and determines that based on your Close Contacts it is medically necessary.

If you are asymptomatic (showing no symptoms) and a CareWell clinician determines it is not medically necessary, or you do not wish to receive an evaluation, CareWell cannot submit to insurance.  You will be required to pay the upfront fee.


Does insurance cover antibody testing?

Currently, most insurance companies are not reimbursing for the antibody test.


Is CareWell Accepting Patients with COVID-19 Symptoms?

Carewell is currently accepting visits from all patients without requiring a referral (even Mass Health patients). Our providers will help you navigate to the next appropriate step if testing for COVID-19 is warranted.


Who is Tested for COVID-19?

We follow evidence-based guidelines for testing based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Massachusetts department of public health, and other sources.

Call your provider, or our urgent care facility for evaluation of your symptoms. From there, we work with both commercial and state labs to facilitate the testing

If you are having difficulty breathing or a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 or visit the nearest emergency department.

Prevention of Coronavirus Disease

We encourage you to follow basic CDC-recommended preventative actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Stay home when you are sick. If you have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance.
  • Avoid close contact (maintain at least 6 feet of distance) with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
