Keeping children safe as they head back to school

Kid going back to school

Summer vacation for most children comes to a close over the next month, and soon they will be headed back to school, or for the littlest ones, going to school for the first time. Keeping children safe as the transition into the new school year should be the number one priority. It’s imperative for parents to share safety information with children before the first day of school. Below are some tips that every child should know.

General safety tips:

  1. Make sure your child knows their information including phone numbers (cell and work), address and emergency contact.
  2. Plan a walking route to school or the bus stop.Choose the most direct way with the fewest street crossings and with intersections that have crossing guards.
  3. Teach your kids — whether walking, biking, or riding the bus to school — to obey all traffic signals, signs and traffic officers.

Various transportation safety:

Riding a Bicycle

  1. Always wear a helmet. However, just as important as wearing a helmet is to make sure it fits properly. A helmet should fit low on the forehead so that two fingers fit between the helmet and eyebrows.
  2. Ride on the right side of the road and always follow the rules of traffic.
  3. Try to only ride during daylight hours. However, if your child will be biking after dark, make sure his or her bicycle is fitted with lights (front and back) and reflectors.
  4. Safety is in numbers – never bike alone. Utilize the buddy system for the ride to and from school.

Walking to School

  1. Always walk with a group.
  2. Always walk on designated walkways and sidewalks.
  3. Only cross the street at designated crosswalks, preferably monitored by a crossing guard. Look both ways before crossing the street.

School bus safety

  1. Stand at least six feet from the curb as the bus approaches.
  2. Make sure the driver can see you before you walk toward the bus.
  3. Hold the handrails getting on and off the bus.
  4. Never cross the street in front of the bus before the driver motions to do so.
  5. Do not move around in the bus. Stay seated at all times.
