As expected, New Year’s is a time for resolutions – many find the first of the year as the perfect time to re-calibrate, recharge and re-energize the body.  Committing to being fit and healthy is not just a program or phase, it’s a major lifestyle change.  And with cold weather and busy schedules, it’s easy to let your fitness goals fall by the wayside.  Here are some tips to keep your fitness on track:

  1. Set Realistic Goals.  Don’t expect to run 12 miles on day one.  Taking on too much too soon will leave you discouraged and sets you up for failure.  Take it easy at the beginning – maybe run a half a mile or bike a few times around your neighborhood.  As the exercises become easier, you can make it more challenging.
  2. Make Time. Lack of time is cited as the number one reason for failure.  Look at your typical daily schedule and carve out 30 minutes for exercise at least day in advance.  Plan wake up a little earlier, not to watch that extra TV show or to work out during your lunch break.
  3. Keep It Interesting.  Don’t limit yourself to one type of exercise – you’ll risk getting bored.  This is the perfect opportunity to try something new – cycle class, yoga or boxing.
  4. Keep on track.  Use a fitness journal or app to help stay on track and record your progress.  Also, be specific about your goals – how exactly are you going to get from point A to point B?  Breaking down the components and keeping regular tabs on progress will keep you focused.
  5. Reward yourself!  It will take weeks, if not months, to see real changes.  Keep in mind that you may be losing fat and gaining muscle in the process, so don’t let the scale dictate your accomplishments.  Reward yourself for staying fit-minded and healthy – go out with friends, get a pedicure or see a new movie.
