If you look forward to the holidays, you’re not alone. The decorations, the family gatherings, the food; for so many people it all adds up to “the most wonderful time of the year.” But for others, the pressure to hang impeccable decorations, host the most enjoyable party, and create a holiday feast no one will ever forget can add up to excess stress, and even lead to holiday depression. And it’s actually more common than you might think. But if you follow some of these tips, you can cut your stress levels down to size and maybe even get through it all with a smile on your face.
Ways To Minimize Holiday Depression
First of all, if just the thought of trying to pull off a picture perfect celebration sends your heart rate through the roof, your best response is to (1) take a deep breath, and (2) accept the fact that not everything has to be (or can be) flawless. There will always be something out of place, or someone who shows up late, or a light that goes out on the tree. But look at it this way: the best stories and memories are almost always those where something did NOT go as planned.
If you feel that planning another family get together this year is simply going to be just too much, let someone know! So many people fall into the trap of “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.” But you know what? You don’t have to do it yourself. That overwhelming feeling can easily trigger holiday depression. So scale down the obligations by asking for help, or even requesting that someone else take it on this time around. Let them know you’ll be happy to pitch in, but can’t do it all.
Finally, remember to take time for yourself this year! Don’t skip that yoga class or get knocked off of your exercise routine just because it’s the holiday season. As much as this is the season of giving, don’t forget to give back to yourself.
